Kannur

Feature Attraction
Located in the west of Kannur town,
the Fort St Angelos was built by the first Portuguese viceroy with the
permission of the Kolathiris. The fort was captured by the Dutch in 1663 and
was sold to the Ali Raja of Kannur in 1772. It is a well preserved
historical monument under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of
India.

November to February is the best time to pay a visit to Kannur.
How to get there
Kannur is an important railway station on the Shornur Mangalore
line. It is also well connected with important cities like Mangalore and
Thiruvananthapuram by the road network.
Calicut is the nearest airport which is 110 km away whereas the Mangalore
airport is 170 km away.

» Thalassery Fort
Following their problems with the Dutch, the British shifted their
commercial capital to Thalassery from
Calicut.
The Thalassery Fort was built by the British in 1700 on a small hill called
Tiruvellapadakunnu which was again strengthened in 1708. The fort was built
with laterite and is still a massive structure.
» Snake Park
Located about 18 km away from Kannur at Parassinikadavu, the park is
dedicated to preservation and conservation of the snakes, many of which are
on the verge of extinction. The snake demonstration conducted here draws
huge crowds to the park.
» Payyambalam Beach
Located near Kannur town, it is among the most beautiful of beaches where
you can spend your evenings with your family or friends.
» Meenkunnu Beach
A big draw for holidaymakers, the Meenkunnu Beach is located at a distance
of 12 km from Kannur. The tranquil ambiance and the golden sand and surf
tempt one to spend some quality time here.
