Kumarakom Beach
A beautiful cluster of little islands on
the Vembanad lake, Kumarakom is a little water world in itself. The place
also boasts of a bird sanctuary, a favourite hangout for the migratory
birds, which sprawls over 14 acres and attracts the bird watchers from all
over the world. A boat trip around the islands is the best thing that can
help you sight rare birds in their natural environment. The place has a
tropical climate and the temperature here varies between 16 and 38 degrees
Celsius.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
This bird sanctuary is located on the banks of the Vembanad lake and
sprawls over more than 100 acres. The place is a paradise for the
ornithologists as the sanctuary affords you a chance to see the exotic birds
such as egrets, darters, waterfowl, wild ducks, marsh harries, bitterns,
teal and herons among other birds.

The months between November to March are the best months to visit the
Kumarakom beach.
How to get there
The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 171 km away. It takes
about 3 hours ride to reach the Muhamma boat jetty at Kumarakom from
Thiruvananthapuram. We'd advise you to arrive at the Cochin International
Airport, though, as the place is nearest to Kumarakom and is just 77 km
away. Kottayam is the nearest railhead from the place which is about 16 km
away by road. Kottayam railway station connects the place with all the
railway stations of Kerala and India. Kottayam has the nearest bus terminal
as well which is 14 km away from Kumarakom.

» Pathiramanal
It is an island on the backwaters spread over an area of about 10 acres and
is home to a variety of rare migratory birds. The island can only be reached
by a boat. Pathiramanal is an ideal break for those on a backwater cruise.
» Thazhathangadi Valiapalli
Located 12 km away from Kumarakom, it is a church that displays some
outstanding architecture, which is a deliberate blend of the Kerala and the
Portuguese styles.
» Thirunakkara Mahadevar Temple
Situated in the heart of the Kottayam town, it is a 500 years old structure
built in the Kerala style of architecture. The temple also has some
outstanding mural paintings on its walls.
» Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls
Located about 18 km away from Kottayam town, the waters falling from a
height of about 100 feet at Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls are a delightful sight.
