Thalassery Beach
Though Thalassery is a lesser known
destination as compared to its neighbours, Kannur and Kozhikode, it offers a
number of colonial relics for you to explore, aside from providing you the
joy of a tranquil beach. And perhaps you might keep coming back here once
you know the exceptional features of the town. Cricket, that British sport,
was first played here. Besides, Thalassery has the distinction of being the
place where cakes were first baked. There are numerous other European

Feature Attraction
Muzhappilangad Beach
This drive-in beach is among the longest in Kerala. One can undertake a
drive on the tightly packed sand up to Kannur. The Dharmadam Island is also
visible from here. During low tide, you can easily wade up to the island.

When to go
The best time to make a trip to Thalassery is between December and May; the
Theyyam season.
How to get there
The Karipur International Airport of Kozhikode (90 km) is the closest
airport from Thalassery. The Thalassery Railway Station has regular trains
connecting to Kannur and Calicut. By road, the town is linked with places
like Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Mangalore, Panjim and Mumbai by National
Highway 17. The nearest bus station is at Kannur.
Other Attractions
» Tellicherry Fort
This colonial structure was built during the 17th century. It is the very
fort from where Lord Wellesely put down many rebellions by the Pazhassi
Raja. One can view the ruins of the Holy Rosary Church from upon the
ramparts of this fort.
» Odathil Palli Mosque
A big draw for visitors to Thalassery is this 500-year-old mosque. The
mosque was erected by an Arab merchant whereas the land on which it is built
was donated by the Portuguese. The copper made ceilings and the wooden walls
are the exceptional features of the structure.
» Suryanarayana Temple
Located at Kadiroor (5 km from Thalassery), the temple dates back to the
13th century. The idol inside the temple is said to be consecrated by Lord
Rama, the legendary hero of epic Ramayana, himself.
» Mambally's Royal Biscuit Factory
The British gifted the art of cake making to Thalassery and this colonial
legacy still lives in the Mambally Bakery. The cake and biscuit factory was
founded by Mambally Babu in the year 1880. A variety of mouthwatering
biscuits are on display here.
