Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of the
Ernakulam district, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is also known as the Salim Ali
Bird Sanctuary as the place was developed due to the untiring efforts of Dr
Salim Ali, the renowned ornithologist. The place is home to more than 500
bird species which include several rare bird species such as crimson
throated barbet, bee eater, sunbird, night heron and common grey hornbill
among other birds.

How to get there
The nearest airport is Kochi Airport which is 71 km away. Aluva is the
nearest railhead which is 48 km away. Kothamangalam is the nearest town
which is 13 km away. Regular buses connect Kothamangalam with the Thattekad
Bird Sanctuary which in turn is itself connected with Ernakulam by regular
buses.

pheasant, Indian roller, white breasted water hen, kite, cuckoo and common
snipe among others. The place is also home to more than 28 varieties of
animals and nine varieties of reptiles.
