Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife
Sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The place is
incomparably rich in terms of biodiversity and it was with a view to
conserving this biodiversity that the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary came into
existence. The headquarters of the sanctuary, which is contiguous with the
Bandipur National Park in Karnataka and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in
Tamil Nadu, is located at Sultan Bathery. The animals that you can see here
include elephant, bison, monkey, panther, jungle cat, tiger, wild dog and
leopard among other animals. There are a large number of birds in the
sanctuary as well which include woodpecker, peacock, owl, babbler, jungle
fowl and cuckoo.

Feature Attraction
Kalpetta
It is a small town with the dense coffee plantations all around it. It is
the headquarters of the Wayanad district in Kerala. There was a time when
Kalpetta used to be a Jain stronghold. The Ananthanantha Temple still
recounts the rich past of the place.

When to go
The months between June to October are the best months to visit the Wayanad
Wildlife Sanctuary.
How to get there
The nearest railhead is Calicut which is 110 km away from the Wayanad
Wildlife Sanctuary. The Karipur International Airport at Kozhikode is the
nearest airport which is 125 km away. The place also has good road
connections with various cities of Kerala and nearby states.
Other Attractions
» Chembra Peak
It is the tallest peak in the region and is located near Vythiri. It will
take you about five hours to reach the peak. Make it a point to see the lake
at the height of 4921 feet.
» Edakkal Caves
Located on the Ambukuthy hill, the Edakkal cave carvings belong to the
neolithic and mesolithic age. There are two levels in the cave and the
drawings are in the second level.
» Pokote Lake
It is a favourite hang out for the vacationers, and is located very near to
the Vythiri. The place also provides you facilities for the boat cruise and
kayaking.
